27 construction workers have been injured and one has been killed after a bridge on the site of next month's Commonwealth Games in Delhi collapsed.
The accident occurred when the 164-foot long footbridge, being built to transport athletes and spectators from the car park to the new stadium, collapsed under the weight of concrete that was being poured on to it
There are no reports of any fatalities. The collapse was blamed on a loose pin in the bridge structure, and is the latest setback to hit the beleaguered organizers of the Games, who have faced torrents of criticism in recent months following numerous reports of ‘uninhabitable’ and ‘filthy’ conditions in the athletes’ village.
Craig Hunter, the England squad’s chef de mission, said 60 of the 280 rooms allocated to English athletes were leaking, while showers, air conditioning units and electrical sockets were malfunctioning.
It remains unknown whether any of the workers will be eligible to make a work accident claim.
