A woman from South London has reached an out-of-court settlement with the NHS after contracting an infection following the birth of her son, reports the Sutton Guardian.
Elizabeth Kane, 31, required stitches during the birth of her son Ethan, and while performing the procedure doctors used swabs to stem the bleeding. However, one of those swabs was left inside her body by accident. She began to feel unwell following the birth, and when she was in the bath thirteen weeks later sahe realised she had developed an infection from the foreign body being left inside her. She says she developed post traumatic stress disorder and agarophobia following her ordeal, and made a compensation claim from the Epsom and St Helier Hospital Trust.
A spokesman for the St Helier hospital said, “We are very sorry for the distress caused to Miss Kane and her family during this time and hope this settlement goes some way towards compensating her for it.”
