Parents of baby boy injured by doctors to claim compensation

by David Osele 6 October 2010

A Scunthorpe couple are to claim compensation from the NHS after their son’s birth left him with permanent disability.

Xavier Cutillo suffered birth complications during his delivery at Scunthorpe General Hospital in December 2009. Doctors used forceps to try and aid the delivery process, but Xavier’s mother, Emma Portogallo, alleges that they used excessive force, which resulted in a fractured skull and damage to his eye, in which he is now blind.

“My son will have to live with the consequences of this for the rest of his life ... we've been left physically and emotionally traumatised,” said Ms Portogallo.

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is talking to the family about a compensation settlement after admitting liability for Xavier’s injuries.
