A boy who was left paralysed for life after a hit and run car crash is to claim compensation after a prolonged legal battle.
Daniel Hennessy, now 13, was just five when he was run over and left for dead by 16 year old Sajid Hussain in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, in 2002. Hussain initially paid his victim just £76, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Even though he was banned from driving for two years, Hussain ploughed into and seriously injured crossing attendant Audrey Chadwick just months later and was sentenced to eighteen months in a young offenders’ institution, before being jailed outright after being caught driving without insurance and whilst disqualified.
The majority, 60%, of Daniel’s claim will be met by the Motor Insurer’s Bureau (MiB) which deals with claims against uninsured and untraceable drivers. The money, the Hennessy family’s lawyer said, is to ensure that Daniel gets the care he needs for the rest of his life. The payout could total millions of pounds.
