Roy Whiting, the paedophile who assaulted and murdered Sarah Payne eleven years ago, will ‘inevitably’ make a compensation claim for personal injury after he was stabbed in the eye on Friday morning.
Whiting, 52, was attacked by another inmate wielding a makeshift knife in Wakefield prison, West Yorkshire, and is expected to allege that the Prison Service failed to implement its duty of care towards him by allowing the attack.
The bid is likely to cost the taxpayer up to £100,000, while Whiting is expected to claim up to £20,000 for his injury. The Prison Service has been urged to ‘robustly defend its position’ by senior prison officers.
Whiting was jailed for life after the murders in 2000 near Littlehampton, West Sussex.
