Scottish councils rack up £10m bill from accidents in last three years

by Accident Advice 16 August 2010

Councils north of the border have been urged to be more careful after news of huge payouts due to road accident damage has emerged. Most of this outlay was due to council vehicles being involved in collisions with other cars as well as property: a gritting lorry in North Ayrshire struck black ice and crashed into a hedge, while another council vehicle hit a cyclist at a roundabout. The reports, obtained under Freedom of Information, reveal that Scottish council vehicles are involved in an average of 15 accidents every day, and the repair bills and compensation claims that are costing so much so settle have prompted action groups to ask the councils to be more responsible about their spending.
