Northern Irish boy may never walk again after 'lorry-surfing' accident

by David Carter 20 August 2010

A boy from Newtownabbey in County Antrim may have to use a wheelchair after a 'lorry surfing' dare turned into tragedy. Scott Rodgers, aged 14, suffered horrific leg injuries when he jumped from a quarry wall on to the roof of a passing lorry, but lost his balance and ended up under the massive wheels of the vehicle. Scott, a promising young footballer, suffered a broken right femur, right ankle and crushed left foot in the accident. Poignantly, he had just signed to a local team and played his first match the night before. He faces extensive surgery to rebuild his shattered limbs and will never be able to walk properly again. The MP for the area urged parents to keep a closer eye on their children, and called the practice of lorry surfing 'an accident waiting to happen.'
