Man, 65, dies in Co Down crash

by Richard Craig 17 August 2011

A man has lost his life on a dangerous stretch of road in County Down.

In a week of road accidents in Northern Ireland, the 65-year-old man, named locally as Kilkeel resident Kevin McAvoy, died after his car smashed head-on into another vehicle as he was travelling along the main road between Newry and Kilkeel.

John McPoland of the Ambulance Service told the Belfast Telegraph that  paramedics attempted to save the man's life at the scene.

"When paramedics arrived they found a large jeep-type vehicle had collided head-on with another car, carrying the person who's now deceased," he said.

"Paramedics and crew then dealt with the people who were in the jeep, a mother and child, taking them both to Daisy Hill Hospital. The three people in the car behind were uninjured to a large degree."

Both mother and child are in a stable condition.
