Londonderry driver's lucky escape after car accident puts him through garden wall

by Alison Leon 15 September 2010

A young driver has had a lucky escape after ploughing into the wall of a bungalow in Coleraine, County Londonderry, at the weekend.

The 21-year-old male, who has not been named, was taken to hospital after the car accident on the Ballycastle Road in the town, which occurred at around 3am on Sunday morning.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, but the garden wall of the Baxters, a retired couple from the town, would need rebuilt.

Mrs Baxter told the Coleraine Times: "We were awoken by a horrendous noise.

"I was just in shock and by the time I got to even look out the window, it was all over."

"It would have been horrendous if any of the grandchildren had been out at the front, but by good luck it was in the middle of the night.”

Mrs Baxter said she and her husband Jimmy bore no ill will towards the young man:

"I'm sure whoever it was wasn't out to cause disruption or annoy anybody."

The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed the accident was being investigated.
