Durham car accident leaves 82 year old woman in serious condition

by Alison Leon 17 September 2010

A car accident in County Durham has left a pensioner in intensive care and three others injured.

The 82 year old woman was a passenger in a Vauxhall Zafira that crossed the carriageway on Front Street, Dipton, at about 7pm yesterday and collided with a Vauxhall Corsa that was being driven in the opposite direction. She is understood to have suffered multiple injuries and is in a serious condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in nearby Newcastle.

Fire crews had to cut the occupants from their cars, which were very badly damaged in the crash, according to police.

The Zafira’s driver, a 55 year old woman, was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham with minor injuries, while the occupants of the Corsa, a 25 year old woman believed to be the driver and a 24 year old male passenger, were taken to the same hospital with fractures.

The road was closed for two and a half hours after the accident and police are appealing for witnesses.
