Aussie town's Speedy name change to cut car crash injuries

by Richard Craig 18 February 2011

An Australian town has resorted to novel methods of promoting road safety after announcing it would change its name for a month.

Speed, a small settlement in Victoria with just 45 residents, is set to change its moniker to SpeedKills to promote awareness of the problems of excess, well, speed.

Inhabitants of the village hope that their campaign, which has already gained momentum via a video on Facebook, will encourage people to slow down on Australia’s country roads, and further afield as well.

The town, reports the BBC, hopes to become a global internet sensation, something that is already well underway.

One resident, Phil Down, has agreed to change his name to Phil Slow Down for the duration of the project.
