Smethwick is a town within the Sandwell metropolitan borough, of the metropolitan county known as the West Midlands in central England. The town is situated just to the West of the city of Birmingham, being on the very edge of the aforementioned metropolitan borough of Sandwell.

The Etymology And History Of Smethwick

It was long believed that the name of ‘Smethwick’ was derived from an Old English word meaning ‘a Smith’s place of work’, but this interpretation has begun to be superseded by another in more recent times. This other interpretation is that it in fact could have translated to mean ‘The settlement on the smooth land’.

The settlement had its own entry in the Domesday Book of 1086, but for much of its existence was actually an outlying hamlet of the village of Harborne. In 1891, however, Harborne became a part of the county borough of Birmingham and therefore switched counties from Staffordshire to Warwickshire leaving Smethwick as a stand alone settlement. From that time, therefore, the town grew and expanded into the settlement which we would recognise today.

Smethwick Today

In the modern day, Smethwick is a relatively large and popular town which is home to approximately 49,000 permanent residents, according to the latest available census data. This makes it a considerable population centre with all of the positives and negatives which this status brings. One such negative factor is of course the fact that a more densely populated settlement inevitably produces a higher number of accidents and injuries. It is with that in mind, therefore, that you may be interested to read on and learn a little more about personal injury compensation claims for Smethwick residents.
