The History Of Port Talbot

There is evidence of there having been human habitation in the area now known as Port Talbot as early as the Bronze Age and the remains of several forts shows that this area remained one of settlement throughout the Iron Age, too. In more modern history, however, the town which is now referred to as Port Talbot grew out of the market town and community of Aberavon.

That community came into being through the Norman era after the construction and establishment of a castle in the region for defensive purposes. It was not until the 19th century in fact, that the Port Talbot name came into existence and at that time it was only used to describe the exact dockland area around the port, and was named for the Talbot family who had been influential in the location and growth of industry and employment in the region. The family remained as important through the 19th century, especially when it came to the development of the port and of the railway links to it, so it is for that reason that the name became applied to the whole settlement.
