Northampton is a large town, borough, non-metropolitan district and the county town of Northamptonshire in the East Midlands region of England. The town is located on the course of the River Nene, and is situated approximately 67 miles (108 km) north-west of London and around 50 miles (80 km) south-east of Birmingham.
The History Of Northampton
There is evidence of human habitation in the area now known as Northampton back as far as the Bronze Age but it was during the Middle Ages that the settlement really rose to nationwide prominence, due to the construction of Northampton Castle. This increased the strategic significance of the town as well as the importance of it as a centre of population and in a more practical sense is what led to Northampton being awarded its charter in 1189 by King Richard I.
The town fell severely out of favour with the monarchy during the English Civil War however, due to its allegiance to the parliamentarians and this led to Charles II ordering the destruction of the castle and the town’s walls. It was this and the later Great Fire of Northampton in 1675, which explains why there is little evidence of the town’s early history in modern day Northampton.
Modern Day Northampton
Today, Northampton is an expanding town that is enjoying a good deal of urban renewal and regeneration, and as such is becoming a more and more popular place to live.
