The Fens

A fen is a term for an area of marshland. Over the years, many of the marshlands in the UK have been drained, however fen land still does exist and covers around one and a half thousand miles squared in total. The drained fen land has primarily been exploited for agriculture as it is particularly fertile and crops include vegetables and grains and cash crops. If the Fens were not drained and protected from flood waters, they would be vulnerable to flooding from water travelling from the uplands. Drainage systems comprise river drainage and internal drainage.

Formation Of The Fens

At the end of the last Ice Age, Britain was connected to the rest of mainland Europe. As the ice melted the sea levels rose, covering the lower lying lands and resulting in the isolation of Britain from Europe. The rising seas also flooded woodland area of the Fenland and produced salt water and freshwater wetlands. Silt was dropped from the rivers and sea into the flooded areas, forming marshes. There are several different types of wetland that are derived from the Fens. These include Washes, which are places which are sometimes covered with water and sometimes visible, such as mud flats. Another example is the Salt marsh, which develops on higher areas of Washes, on which plants that can tolerate salty conditions can thrive. Finally the Fens themselves are regions of shallow water that support the growth of plants that thrive in the nutrient rich environment.
