Claims in Dunfermline

Did you know that the popular singer, Barbara Dickson was born in Dunfermline? Although Barbara made her first commercial recording in 1968, it was not until she appeared as a resident guest artist on the popular television show, ‘The Two Ronnies’, that she became more widely known. In the late 1970’s, her performances on the BBC comedy were viewed by over ten million viewers every week.

Barbara was subsequently noticed by composers, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice, who asked her to perform a song from their new musical, ‘Evita’. She recorded the song, ‘Another Suitcase, Another Hall’ and it became a huge hit in 1977. Dickson went on to play a lead role in the musical, ‘Blood Brothers’, for which she received both critical and popular acclaim. However, Barbara is probably best remembered as part of a duo performed a song from another Tim Rice musical, ‘Chess’. Rice asked Barbara and Elaine Paige to record the duet and it was a massive global success. In fact, it is still included in the Guinness Book of Records as being the biggest selling female duet of all time.
