Chesterfield is a market town and borough within the ceremonial County of Derbyshire, in the north of England. The town is located approximately 24 miles (39 km) north of Derby, on a confluence of the rivers Rother and Hipper and is also close to the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire. The town’s most famous landmark is undoubtedly its crooked spire which belongs to the predominantly 14th century church, and which gives the town’s football team its nickname of ‘the Spireites’.

Archaeological evidence suggests that there has been settlement on the site since the 1st century AD, and has also discovered the Roman fort which is thought to have been the first stimulus for this settlement. This fort was abandoned once the Romans had brought peace to the region but the area was then further settled during the Anglo-Saxon period and it is from this time that the town gets its name. The name Chesterfield is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words Caester and Feld, meaning respectively ‘Roman Fort’ and ‘Grazing Land’, presumably referring to the former and current land use in the area at the time.
