Barry In The Vale Of Glamorgan

Did you know that the name of the town of Barry in Wales is taken from the Welsh language word barr which translates as meaning hill? However some say that the region takes its name from Saint Baruc whose remains are to be found in a chapel in the area. Saint Baruc was a Welsh saint who lived during the 6th century. Baruc was a follower of Saint Cadoc and he was drowned in an unfortunate accident. His feast day is held on the 27th of September.

Human Activity For Thousands Of Years

The area in and around Barry has been the site of human activity for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence includes Mesolithic tools on Barry Island and stone axe heads dating from the Neolithic period which were discovered in St Andrews Major. There is also evidence of an Iron Age hill fort, Bronze Age earthworks called barrows and a farm dating from the Iron Age.

Barry Castle

Originally, the castle was constructed over an earlier earthwork and was designed in the shape of a manor house. Over the years, various additions improved the castle. For example in the 13th century, two stone buildings were added while in the 14th century, a large hall and gatehouse was constructed. The village of Barry grew up around the castle, developing a watermill and port as well as a church.
