Bargoed In Wales

The town of Bargoed in Wales derives its name from the Welsh language word, Bargod which translates as border. It is located on the old county boundary between Glamorgan and Monmouthshire so the name is entirely apt. The town is famous for being the birthplace of the actress Doris Hare. Doris was born to a family who owned a portable theatre and she spent much of her childhood appearing in acts all over the UK, after her début performance at the grand age of 3. In her 20s, she honed her craft appearing in various stage roles including the West End and Broadway.

On The Buses

Her most famous role however was the role of Mrs Butler in the ITV comedy series On the Buses. The series was so successful that it gave rise to three films in which Hare reprised her role. After enjoying a long a successful career in show business, her final public appearance was at the tender age of 87 when she performed in the London Palladium with John Mills. She was awarded several accolades during her lifetime, including an MBE in 1941 and a Variety Club of Great Britain award in 1982. She sadly passed away in the year 2000.
