Constable Country

Did you know that most of Constable Country is contained within the region of Babergh? John Constable was an English painter who was known for his Romantic style. He specialised in landscapes of the region around his own home and one of his most famous paintings is The Hay Wain, painted in 1821. This painting which currently hangs in the National Gallery in London is considered one of the greatest English paintings.

John Constable And France

Constable was born in East Bergholt, a small village which is located on the River Stour. His father was the owner of the mill in the village and made his fortune trading corn. When he was young, Constable enjoyed sketching the countryside in which he lived and his father finally agreed to let him enter the Royal Academy to study art, rather than enter the family business as was expected. In 1816, John married Maria Bicknell and in 1819 he was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy. The Hay Wain was exhibited in the famous Paris Salon in 1824 where it was awarded a gold medal.  Perhaps due to this success, Constable sold many of his paintings in France, while in England he only sold around 20 through his entire life. Indeed, Constable’s work is known to have inspired Delacroix  as well as the French Impressionists and the Barbizon School.
