Bone Fractures

A bone is said to be fractured when the structured is broken in some way. There are many potential causes for bone fracture, including trauma. The bone itself does not contain pain receptors but the fracture will cause pain due to muscle spasms, swelling of the tissue around the break and damage to the periosteum, the lining of the bone itself. Usually a fracture is diagnosed following medical examination and an X ray which shows up bone.

Bone Healing

The process of bone healing starts with the development of a blood clot around the broken region. Special cells called fibroblasts form a bone matrix onto which is deposited crystals which transform the matrix into bone. The entire process can take up to 18 months but generally an adult bone has returned to strength after around 3 months.

Types of Fracture

Fractures may be closed or open. A closed fracture is one in which the skin remains intact, an open is where the fracture breaks through the skin and is therefore prone to contamination and infection. Spiral fractures are those in which the bone has twisted and an impacted fracture is one in which bone segments are pushed into one another. Other types include the linear fracture, which is a break along the long axis of the bone, and the oblique fracture in which the break is diagonal to the long axis.
