The History Of Abergavenny
Did you know that the name of the Welsh village of Abergavenny is derived from an old Brythonic word? Gobannia means river of the blacksmiths, in reference to the local river and the importance of the town’s iron smelting works. The river became known as Gafenni and the town became Aber Gafenni or Abergavenny, from the Welsh for mouth of the river Gavenny.
During the Roman Invasion of Britain, there was a Roman fort located in the region, remains of which were unearthed in the 1960. In the early Norman period, the town developed following the construction of the Priory by the First Baron of Ballon. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry the Eighth, the priory’s money was used to establish the King Henry VIII Grammar School. Abergavenny later became known for its production of flannel and the manufacture of periwigs made from goat hair. It also became known for its cattle and sheep market during the 19th century. Livestock auctions are still held today in the town.
