The Tinning History Of Abercarn

Did you know that the small town of Abercarn in Wales used to have a thriving coal mining industry? It also supported local iron works and tin plate works. Unfortunately, all these industries have now closed.

Tinning is an industrial process that coats iron or steel with tin to prevent the formation of rust. The product is called tin plate. In the past, tin plate was used to make tin cans which were then used to preserve various goods including fish, meat, fruit and even cigarettes.

The process which evolved in the 20th century involves a sequence of different steps. starting with the tin bar; a flat bar obtained from the iron works and made of steel or iron. The bar was cut and then rolled and cut to the required dimensions. The plates are then pickled in acid to remove the scale and then annealed for 10 hours and allowed to cool. This is followed by further rolling and final cutting. The tin is fixed to the plate and dried and cleaned.

Tin Fixing

There are now two industrial methods for plating iron and steel. The first is hot-dipping wherein the iron bars are coated with a thin layer of tin in the pack mill process. Electroplating is another technique which produces a smooth finish. The steel or iron is placed in a container containing a solution of tin salt. The bar is attached to the negative cathode and connected to an electrical circuit. The current causes the tin ions to attach to the surface of the iron or steel.
